October color in the Peterson Prairie Plots

Even in October and after last week's first frost, the Peterson Prairie Plots remain a beautiful place. The Big Bluestem grass (Andropogon geradii) has a beautiful bronze color with red overtones this time of year. A few asters missed the frost and remain colorful. Some of the Yellow Coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata) are still trying to bloom and the yellow petals stand out against the tan background. One Indian Blanket plant is still blooming with its pretty brick red petals. Black and yellow garden spiders, some very big, are visible among the plants that line the prairie trails. The black seed pods of Wild Senna (Cassia hebecarpa) contrast nicely with the prairie background. Visitors to the Peterson Prairie Plots are still welcome this time of year from dawn until dusk.
